DEXTER - Lenora Smith, 85, died June 19, 2004, at the Missouri Southern Healthcare Facility in Dexter.

Born July 8, 1918, in Hornersville to the late Luther and Bessie Eaker Gooch, she had lived in Essex most of her life moving to Dexter 17 years ago. Active with the Dexter Nutrition Center, the Friendly Peoples Club and a member of The Gospel Five for over 10 years, she worked at the Christian Bookstore and at McDonald's Dress shop before retiring. She was a member of the First General Baptist Church in Dexter.

On June 12, 1937, she married Carl William Smith, who preceded her in death on April 9, 1982. Also preceding her in death was one daughter, Carlene Noyes.

Surviving are: one son, Don Smith of East Prairie; one daughter, Norma Beatty of Sullivan; one brother, Lyndahl Gooch of Flint, Mich.; and seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Watkins and Sons Chapel in Dexter where funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Kenneth Biggs of Dexter will officiate.

Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery near Essex.
