PENSACOLA, Fla. - Aviation Cadet Charles Tanner, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Sayers Tanner of Sikeston, could thank his own level head and quick decisive action in an emergency for saving his life on Sept. 10. Young Tanner had presence of mind enough to bail out of his plane after a collision in the air Saturday morning. He floated to earth beneath his opened parachute at Pensacola, Fla., without suffering a scratch.

SIKESTON - Could a tragedy like the fire at a North Carolina chicken factory happen in Southeast Missouri? Not likely, but, but for the wrong reasons. There aren't too many rural factories here. The bad news is, there are too few inspectors to check things out. Jim Bradley is an inspector for the New Madrid county Health Department. He checks many restaurants, schools - even motels. But he doesn't have much company on the inspecting trail. "Counties just don't have the budget," he said, "and any inspector wouldn't be supported by ordinance anyway."
