SIKESTON - Commercial and residential construction, estimated to cost a total of $23,300 was approved in city building permits issued during August. Nine permits were issued through the office of City Clerk A.C. Garrett during the month.

SIKESTON - The Rev. Robert Seal assumed pastoral duties Aug. 23 at the East Side Church of the Nazarene.


ST. LOUIS - Mike Collins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Collins, has received word that he has been awarded an honor scholarship to Washington University in St. Louis. The stipend carries a cash value of $500 for each of the four years of his undergraduate study.

SIKESTON - The opening of dove season was Tuesday at sunrise. Hunters took to the field early in the morning in order to get a good hunting spot. The dove population is up tremendously this year.

SIKESTON - Winners of the Sikeston Ladies Golf Association Handicap Tournament held Aug. 20 are Rosalie Snider, Dianne Blanchard, Jane Kirk, Betty Wright, Nancy Galemore, Henrietta Ferrell, Jane Plucknett, Jo Spitzmiller, Dee Bailey, Nell Maupin, Pat Wise, Bonnie Conn, Doris Stepp and Evelyn Campbell.


SIKESTON - The Sikeston Department of Public Safety, along with state and federal counterparts, have adopted a stronger and stricter policy on drug dealers in the Sikeston area. "We're sending out a message, a stronger, tougher message: 'If you sell drugs in Sikeston, we're going to come knocking on your door and you'll wind up with your tail in jail!'" came the statement from Capt. Drew Juden of the Sikeston DPS.
