SIKESTON - Fire swept the roof and upper floor of a house at 415 Prosperity St. about noon today, almost destroying the household furnishings of Mr. and Mrs. Royal Kellett, who lived on the upper floor. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Singleton, who occupied the lower floor, were able to carry out several pieces of their furnishings since the fire was largely confined to the upper part of the house and roof.
SIKESTON - Dr. Robert Lively, pastor of the Trinity Baptist Church, will speak at the annual union Good Friday service at 2 p.m. on April 12.
SIKESTON - "Planning a Career in American Business" is the theme of the district convention of the Future Business Leaders of America to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 6 at the Sikeston High School.
SIKESTON - Final preparations are being made for the 8th Annual Kenny Rogers Cerebral Palsy Telethon, which is only two days away. This is the first year the telethon will originate from the Ramada Inn of Sikeston.
SIKESTON - The planned seven-week outage started March 6, on schedule, according to Power Plan Manager Chester Cardwell. The major overhaul at the 20-year-old plant is expected to cost an estimated $8.2 million. An unanticipated tube failure in the boiler primary superheater section on March 1, adds about $250,000 to that total.
SIKESTON - Gerald Oliver has been a fifth-grade teacher, a math instructor and a principal. As of July 1, he will also be a retiree. On Tuesday his formal request was announced and accepted by the Sikeston Public Schools Board of Education.
