Sikeston girls win, advance in tourney

Monday, December 17, 2001

BROSLEY - Joy Daniel led Sikeston's Lady Bulldogs Saturday as they defeated Neelyville in the opening round of the Twin Rivers Lady Royals Tournament.

Daniel totaled 22 points in the Lady Bulldogs' 57-32 win.

"I thought our girls played really well," said Sikeston head coach Lee Brooks. "Joy (Daniel) and Kerri (Jones) really stepped up for us. We were taller than they are, and we really used that to our advantage."

Jones was also a major part of the game for Sikeston as she dumped in 13 points.

While Sikeston's size overwhelmed Neelyville, the Lady Tigers also hurt themselves with poor free throw shooting.

Neelyville was a dismal 3-14 from the charity stripe.

Neelyville hung with the Lady Bulldogs for a quarter, trailing only 15-11. However, Sikeston's size began to pay big dividends in the second and third quarter as the Lady Bulldogs outscored Neelyville 32-13 to seal the game.

Sikeston will next be in action at 5:30 p.m. today against the winner of the East Carter/Greenville game. The score of that game was unavailable at press time.
