SIKESTON - Among the Sikestonians planning to attend the Sugar Bowl Game at New Orleans, La., New Year's Day are: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Harris, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Beckett, Miss Helen Campbell, Loomis Mayfield Jr. and Jean Klein.

SIKESTON - Firemen loaded up hundreds of toys they had received from people to be refinished, repaired and put in working order. The toys - 15 truck loads of them - went to unfortunate youngsters in 77 homes.

SIKESTON - Sikeston, like the rest of the state, received rain throughout the night that froze as it hit the ground. The near freezing temperature coated everything in town with a thin layer of ice. Streets were passable but hazardous in some spots and some branches were broken by the ice.

BENTON - "My greatest fear," says Scott County Sheriff Bill Ferrell, "is a prisoner who has a massive heart attack and has to stay in intensive care for an extended period of time." Ferrell is worried about the possible $100,000 medical bill that could be presented to the county for the treatment of that prisoner. "If a prisoner says he's sick," Ferrell says, "we have to try to take care of it."


SIKESTON - 'Tis the season for shoplifting. With more people shopping for the holidays, store owners see an increase in stolen merchandise. To combat the crime, stores like Kmart and Wal-Mart use undercover security and a high profile staff. By wandering the aisles, employees not only help the customers but watch for theft.
