Celeste Menees
CAPE GIRARDEAU - Celeste Sutter Menees, 100, died May 7, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Born Jan. 10, 1902, near Puxico, daughter of the late Alfred and Addie Rucker Sutter, she lived near and in Puxico all her life before moving to Chateau Girardeau in 1987. She attended Rock Hill and Puxico schools and was a bookkeeper for Citizens State Bank during World War I and later worked in the family business, The Puxico Mercantile Co. Menees was Puxico city clerk for 25 years and member of the United Methodist Church in Puxico for 60 years, where she was treasurer for many years, a Sunday school teacher and held other offices. A 50-year member of the Puxico Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, she was a charter member of the Puxico Business and Professional Womens Club and past member of the White Shrine in Poplar Bluff. She transferred her church membership to Centenary United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.
On Sept. 9, 1938, she married Ogle O. Menees who preceded her in death on May 5, 1983.
Survivors include: one brother and sister-in-law, Alton F. and Carrie Sutter of Cape Girardeau; and several nieces and nephews.
One sister, Isa Kleeman, preceded her in death on Dec. 13, 1991.
Visitation begins at 6 p.m. Thursday at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Puxico, where Eastern Star rites are scheduled for 7 p.m.
Services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Rev. James A. Sanderson of Cape Girardeau and the Rev. Wiley McGhee of Puxico will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Puxico Cemetery.
