J. Loyd Carter

BERNIE - J. Loyd Carter, 95, died Aug. 16, 2002, at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter.

Born Jan. 17, 1907, at Ellsinore, son of the late Jessie and Irene Walker Carter, he was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bernie.

On April 17, 1927, at Ellsinore, he married Edith Cates who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: two sons, Ivan Willis Carter of Bonne Terre and Sherman Loyd Carter of Bernie; three daughters, Verna Roberts of Wappapello, Leatha McElvoy of Springfield and Brenda Collins of Lakeland, Fla.; one brother, Tony Carter of St. Clair; one sister, Bertha Wise of St. Louis; and 22 grandchildren and more than 100 great-, great-great and great-great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Freeman Luke Carter; one daughter, Naomi Dockins; seven brothers and three sisters; and one grandson, James Darrin Carter.

Services were conducted at 1 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Bernie with the Rev. John Knapp officiating.

Burial followed in the Bernie Cemetery.
