DEXTER - Velma Lee Cannon, 97, died May 3, 2003, at Missouri Southern Healthcare.

Born Feb. 4, 1906, at Frisco, daughter of the late John C. and Nancy Boyt Snider, she was a member of the Church of the Brethren at Frisco. She was a bookkeeper for the J.P. Ross Cotton Company at Essex and member of Dexter Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 311.

On Sept. 15, 1923, at Frisco, she married Norman Arvell Cannon who preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1969.

Survivors include: one son, Loy Cannon of Long Beach, Calif.; five daughters, Louella Layton, Marcella Corlies, Norma Gibbons and Helen Lane Norman of Dexter and JoAnn Smith of Dallas, Texas; and 12 grandchildren and several great- and great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by five brothers, Tommy Snider, Asa Snider, Paul Snider, Marion "Babe" Snider and Charlie Snider; and three sisters, Lily Wilson, Pearl Swinger and Mary Helen Myers.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter, where services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Ramie Gass will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Essex Cemetery.
