BRAWLEY, Calif. -- Clifford M. Brown, 66, formerly of Mississippi County, Mo., died April 3, 2003, at Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley.

Born Nov. 19, 1936, in Mississippi County, son of the late John J. and Maggie Goode Brown, he graduated from Charleston (Mo.) High School and worked in the cotton industry. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was a member of Brawley Elks Lodge 1420 for 15 years and served as secretary of the lodge for five years. He earned an associate of science degree from Imperial Valley College and had worked for the Growers Gin. Brown was then employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Brawley for 34 years before retiring as operations manager.

On Dec. 31, 1959, in Winterhaven, he married Margaret Reed who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: three sons, Mark Brown, Paul Brown and Matthew Brown of Brawley; one daughter, Elizabeth Brown of Lake Balboa; two sisters, Dorothy Griggs of Brawley and Mary Todd of Wyatt, Mo.; one brother, Estel "Hade" Brown of Brawley; and four grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were one son, John Brown in 1985; and five brothers and one sister.

Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Frye Chapel in Brawley.

Graveside services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Riverview Cemetery in Brawley.

A memorial celebration scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday will be conducted at the Brawley Elks Lodge with lodge members officiating.
