CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Sikeston's golf team took fifth place in the Notre Dame Invitational Tournament on Monday, scoring a 345 in the field of 15 teams.
"A brutal wind and fast greens kept the scores higher than we normally see at this tournament," said Sikeston coach Rick Oetting. "There were only four scores in the 70s. Most scores were high 80s and up. Even last year's state champion (Dexter) shot an 89. I counted 34 of 80 scores below 90."
Sikeston's E.C. Atchison tied for fifth place with a score of 81. Tanner Fritz had the 11th lowest score, checking in with an 84.
"The team felt frustrated that they didn't shoot better," said Oetting. "I'm not pleased either, but sometimes you have to look at the big picture and say 'It's okay, we know we will improve and we will win.' We have a week off from matches and we have developed a strategy to fix the week spots in our game. I think the team will be stronger and ready for action next week."
Poplar Bluff won the event with a score of 333.
They were followed by Jackson (334), Cape Central (335), Ste. Genevieve (340), Sikeston (345), Fredericktown (347), North County (335), Dexter (335), Notre Dame (358), Valle Catholic (362), Farmington (366), St. Vincent (387), Perryville (393) and Caruthersville (399).
Jackson's Matt Litzelfeiner fired the lowest score of the day with a 75.
He was followed by Poplar Bluff's Ryan Hutson at 76, Cape Central's Todd Obergoenner at 79, Jackson's Erick Fraley at 79, Atchison at 81, Poplar Bluff's Josh Dowdy at 81, Cape Central's Tyson Seabaugh at 83, Farmington's Jeremy Cox at 83, Ste. Genevieve's Greg Ladd at 83 and Farmington's Kevin Foster at 83.
