FARMINGTON - The Sikeston tennis team got off to a good start to the season with a first place finish in the Fourth Annual Farmington Invitational on Saturday.

Sikeston took first with 38 points followed by Farmington with 32 points. Poplar Bluff took third with 17 points and Potosi finished fourth with three points.

"We played pretty well for the first time out, considering the weather," said Sikeston head coach Brian James. "It was very cold and windy and I thought the guys handled themselves pretty well. I like the format of this tournament because it gives everybody a chance to play their own little brackets, so everybody is given a chance to have some success."

Sikeston got four first place finishes out of six divisions. No. 2 Peter Jones, No. 3 Marc Leible, No. 4 Chris Robey and No. 5 Kyle Weeks all took first place.

No. 1 ranked Ryne Vickery took second place while No. 6 Matt Strom took second place.

"We've got about 10 days before our next match and it's against Cape, and that's a big match for us," said James. "We've got some improving to do and we've got to work a lot on doubles before then. Doubles is going to be key for us this year, so we need to get sharp in that area."

Sikeston will play at Cape Central next Thursday at 4 p.m.
