COLUMBIA, S.C. - Bruce Randolph Allan, beloved husband of Dixie Kay Allan, died Tuesday, July 5, 2005, following an extended illness.

Born Oct. 7, 1920, in Toronto, Canada, he was the only child of the late James Alexander and Alice Taylor Allan. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a master's degree in metallurgy.

Mr. Allan worked extensively with governments and corporations around the world to develop processes for mining and utilizing the metal aluminum. He became a United States citizen in 1976 and served as president of Noranda Aluminum, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio.

In addition to his widow, Mr. Allan is survived by his sons and their wives, Douglas (Rexene) and Robert (Marlene) Allan; his daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Allan Oakley (Wayne); stepdaughter, Angela Mayo (Dan); and stepson, Kirk Lloyd (Cherie). He was "Pappie" to five grandchildren.

A wonderful husband, father and grandfather, Bruce lived by the words of another scientist, Albert Einstein: "The ideals which have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been kindness, beauty, and truth."
