SIKESTON - The Sikeston tennis team improved to 7-3 on the season with a 6-3 victory against Kennett on Thursday. SIKESTON - The Sikeston tennis team improved to 7-3 on the season with a 6-3 victory against Kennett on Thursday.

Sikeston won four of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to pull out the victory.

"We played much better today," said Sikeston head coach Lynne DeWitt. "We've got a tough match on Monday with Charleston. I expect the girls to keep improving."

Sikeston's Nos. 1 and 2 players pulled out what DeWitt called, "great matches." Elizabeth Killion beat Suzanne Carter 8-1 while Lindsay Leible beat Charla Chailland 8-3.

In perhaps the best match of the day, Sikeston's Jeri Nichols hold off Haylee Hunt in a tiebreaker, winning 9-8 (9-7 tiebreaker). Also, Chelsea Gilliland beat Whitney Bruce 8-3.

Sikeston's Charlie Richey lost 3-8 to Brea Rose and Jessica Colwick lost 2-8 to Katie Potts.

In doubles, Killion and Leible beat Carter and Chailland 8-3 and Richey and Nichols beat Rose and Hunt 8-6.

Gilliland and Emily Bowman lost 5-8 to Bruce and Potts.

Sikeston lost the junior varsity match 4-5. Hallie Lambert and Brittney Bard were singles winners for Sikeston.

The doubles teams of Lindsey James and Lambert and Ellie Hensley and Bard were also winners.

Sikeston will host Charleston on Monday at 4 p.m.

CHARLESTON -- Charleston's tennis team swept Chaffee in its final home match of the regular season on Thursday, 9-0.

"We played real well," said Charleston coach Mitch Baker. "We got a few more girls in there and got them some varsity experience. I'm pleased with how we played up and down the lineup."

In varsity singles, Laura Burton beat Chaffee's Mallory Kiefer 8-2. In the second spot, Claire Showmaker defeated Chaffee's Casey Guzman 8-2. At No. 3, KaMyia Sager blanked Chaffee's Amy Holmes 8-0.

In the fourth spot, Kara True shut out Chaffee's Shelby Rice 8-0. At No. 5, Mandy Shankle swept Chaffee's Stefanie Whitaker 8-0, then Lauren Smith defeated Chaffee's Brittany Koch 8-1.

"Amanda Horrell has done a wonderful job (at Chaffee)," said Baker. "She graduated a bunch and had a whole bunch of girls that were just beginners this year. They have come a long way. They're playing a lot better."

In varsity doubles, Megan Luehmann and Showmaker beat Guzman and Rice 8-1. Sager and True defeated Kiefer and Holmes 8-2, then Kati Luehmann and Ashley Shands swept Koch and Tara Probst 8-0.

Charleston (9-1) will travel to Sikeston on Monday for a 4 p.m. match. The Lady Bluejays also won Thursday's junior varsity game 3-0.

Singles winners were Elizabeth Ann Moxley and Ali Fox. The doubles team of Rebecca Rolwing and Jessie Duenne also won.
