POPLAR BLUFF - The Sikeston soccer team improved to 3-6 on the season with a 3-0 shutout at Poplar Bluff on Tuesday.

Blake Taylor had two goals and Scott Gardner had one goal for the Bulldogs.

Chris Carnell, Andrew Box and Ryan Beaird each had assists.

The Bulldogs out-shot the Mules 17-6 in the game. Caleb Davidson, in his first start as goalkeeper, recorded the shutout.

"It's a pretty big win for us, especially with three of our starters out," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long. "We played junior varsity kids and they really gelled together with the other varsity players. I think we had lost five in a row to them."

Sikeston's junior varsity lost to the Mules 5-1. Brandon Sauceda scored the lone goal with Stephen Beydler providing the assist.

BENTON -- Kelly (13-7) was blanked 8-0 by Poplar Bluff on Tuesday.

Winning pitcher Kristie Ploetze shut out the Lady Hawks on two hits while the Lady Mules had 11.

"Bluff just came out hitting," said Kelly coach Rhonda Ratledge.

Brittany Ponder and Kailie Hughes split Kelly's hits.

Casey Kern took the loss, striking out four with one walk.

CAPE GIRARDEAU -- Sikeston's undefeated No. 1 singles player Jenni DeWitt captured the lone win in a 1-8 loss to Cape Central on Tuesday.

DeWitt defeated Dani Gross, 8-5, to keep her winning skein intact.

"Jenni had an extremely hard match," said Sikeston coach Lynne DeWitt. "Dani (Gross) is such a great player. She gets to everything."

However, DeWitt and partner Tess Marshall saw their undefeated doubles' streak halted with a 3-8 loss to Central's Gross and Monica Toole.

Sikeston's junior varsity lost 0-6.

Said coach DeWitt, "The JV players played hard today. They all played three matches apiece."

Sikeston hosts Kennett on Thursday at 4 p.m.
