SIKESTON - J.T. Anderson, a teenager from Sikeston, floated slowly with his brother Jeremy, downstream on the Current River on their way to the family's campground. An older couple, Wayne and Louise Garrett of Marion, Ill., was tubing together just behind J.T. Louise Garrett, 56, had been swimming since she was a child and had never feared the water. Relaxation reversed to hysteria when the rapids shot Louise Garrett into the last bend. Suddenly, Mrs. Garrett's only hold on her life was as strong as her grip on the tree trunk to which she clung. J.T., however, saw the situation and did something about it. As the Current forcefully tugged Mrs. Garrett's body out to deeper water, J.T. maneuvered his inner tube tire to the half-sunken tree. She was able to stay above the current because J.T. blocked the rush with his body, positioned a foot from her head. "I think he's great. He wasn't afraid to get involved," Mrs. Garrett said thankfully.
