~Cost for work estimated at less than $10,000
MINER -- Miner's broken fire hydrants will be replaced.
Miner Board of Aldermen members approved the replacement of three fire hydrants at a cost not to exceed $10,000 during their regular monthly meeting Thursday.
The three hydrants to be replaced are located near City Hall, near the Miner Baptist Church, at the end of the line on County Road 539, according to Randy Allen, fire chief.
"Those are the only three we know right now that are actually inoperative," Allen said.
Mayor Betty Barnes said she was advised by the city engineer that if the cost is under $10,000 and related to water maintenance a bidding process is not required.
In other business during Thursday's meeting:
* An amendment to the city's personnel handbook to clarify the one-year residency requirement for elected officials is one year preceding the date of the election was approved by the Board.
City Attorney Joe Fuchs said the amendment brings the handbook into compliance with state statutes.
* Board members approved having the carpets in the courtroom and City Hall offices cleaned for $459.
City Clerk Janet Tuttle recommended cleaning the carpets instead of installing new carpets as moving everything in city hall to install new carpet would be more work than was it was worth.
* The Board approved holding a municipal election on April 8.
Offices to be elected are two-year terms for the mayor, the Ward 1 board seat presently held by Frank Tatum and the Ward 2 seat presently held by Peggy Holman.
* Board members authorized the mayor and city clerk to sign a settlement agreement with Verizon Wireless to resolve a class-action lawsuit related to financial and billing practices.
This will enable the city to recover its portion of the funds from the suit, Fuchs explained.
* The purchase of a computer for $1,200 from P&C Services in Sikeston was approved by the Board contingent on the hiring of an assistant city clerk.
