SIKESTON -- Ray Clark ran for first-quarter touchdowns of 36 and 37 yards Thursday night as the Sikeston Bulldogs defeated Dexter 14-0 in a freshman football game at the Sikeston Public Schools Stadium.
At the 5:44 mark, Clark rumbled 36 yards for his first TD of the game before Sam Erwin ran for a 2-point conversion and an 8-0 Sikeston lead.
Clark completed the scoring in the game with no time remaining in the opening period, when his 37-yard run ended in the end zone.
"We did some good things to get this win," Sikeston freshman coach Brad Blackmon said. "We hustled, the offensive line got off the ball very well and we played hard."
"There were a lot of mistakes that led to penalties that we need to correct. I think we would have scored more points, if we didn't fumble the ball in key situations -- like on 1st-and-goal from the Dexter 2-yard line. It proves that we need better execution or else we will have a lot of drives that will be stopped."
Sikeston rushed 24 times for a total of 234 yards, while Erwin guided the Bulldogs' passing attack for 30 yards on a 2-of-3 effort.
Clark had seven carries for a team-high 104 yards and Darryl Howard added 59 yards on seven running attempts. Erwin picked up 39 yards on the ground, while Michael Sherrod had 31 rushing yards.
The Bulldogs' defense was sparked by Janiel Hatchett's 15-yard interception return.
Sikeston (1-0 overall) returns to action Thursday, when it has a makeup contest with Scott City at the SPS Stadium.
SIKESTON -- The Sikeston seventh and eighth grade football teams split their season-openers on Tuesday against New Madrid County Central at Sikeston Public Schools Stadium.
The Sikeston seventh grade, playing in its inaugural season, held on to defeat NMCC's seventh-graders 6-0.
Sikeston broke a scoreless tie in the third quarter with an 8-yard touchdown run by tailback Markeith Bratcher behind the aggressive blocking from fullback Darien Boyd.
NMCC (1-1 overall) used nearly the entire fourth quarter to drive to the goal line, but Sikeston's defense stiffened up to force the turnover on downs with less than 30 seconds left in the game.
In the eighth grade game, NMCC defeated Sikeston 14-0. NMCC scored in the first quarter to take a 6-0 lead after a 31-yard run by Lorenzo Hill. The Eagles (2-0 overall) scored another touchdown in the second quarter when Hill scampered in from 4 yards out. D.K. Wilson ran in for the 2-point conversion to reach the final margin.
Sikeston's seventh and eighth grade teams will travel to play Kennett at 10 a.m. Saturday. The NMCC eighth grade team plays at Caruthersville on Tuesday before the Eagles' seventh-graders host East Prairie at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

In a story about the Kelly Cross Country Invitational, Dexter High's girls team scored 31 points to place second in the meet. Poplar Bluff won the girls team competition with a score of 28 points. Originally, the story stated Dexter had won the girls meet.
The varsity girls champion of the Kelly Invitational was Poplar Bluff's Hannah Blalock, whose winning time was 19-minutes, 4-seconds. Originally, the story stated her time was 21:12.
The Standard Democrat regrets the errors.
