EAST PRAIRIE - Miss Sweetcorn 1985 in East Prairie is Lynn Lewis, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Lewis of East Prairie Star Route. Miss Lewis and her court were chosen Saturday night kicking off the week-long Sweetcorn Festival. Chosen runner-up in the competition which featured 11 girls was Gail Lynn Harper, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gaylon Harper of Sikeston. Second runner-up is Michelle McTigue, 17, daughter of Bennie McTigue of East Prairie and the late Fremont McTigue.
PORTAGEVILLE - A $4,000 grant will fund efforts by the Portageville Police Department to ensure drivers in their community are "safe and sober." The grant, made from the Missouri Division of Highway Safety, supports local enforcement agencies by funding overtime for officers during the summer months. Portageville Police Chief Ronnie Adams said the increased enforcement will begin within the next two weeks.

CHARLESTON - County commissioners unanimously approved the reappointment of Ron Crenshaw and Don Burnett to three-year terms on the Port Authority Board of Directors. Appointments to the County's IDA board are due July 31 and interested parties are urged to come before the commission. Terms expiring are those of Ron Seals, Herb Llewellyn and John McMinn.
