CAPE GIRARDEAU -- A Portageville man has pled guilty for unlawful possession of firearms.
Jorge Burk, 34, entered a plea of guilty to one felony count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm during an appearance Thursday before U.S. District Judge Charles A. Shaw.
On April 22, the New Madrid County Sheriff's office was investigating a report of shots fired around the city of Howardsville. Based on those reports, the officers recovered a rifle on the side of County Road 506 in New Madrid County.
The officers went to the home of George Burk and arrested him. During that arrest, the officers discovered that Burk had obtained another rifle from the home. That rifle was also found and seized by officers.
Burk admitted that he possessed both rifles that were seized by the officers on April 22. Due to his prior felony conviction, he is prohibited by law from possessing firearms.
Burk now faces a maximum punishment of 10 years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing is set for Dec. 10.
