Speakout 10/12

Wednesday, October 12, 2005

I hope you can help me. The clowns that ride the little motorcycles in the parade here. I was wondering if someone could tell me if you wanted to hire one of them, for like a child's birthday, how would you go about doing that?

Call Johnnie Dixon, head of the Shriner clowns, at 571-5378.

It just burns me that someone would have an issue with individual recognition of the "boy from the East Prairie football team." Historically individuals have always received praise and have been written about from the high school to professional level. Recognizing individuals does not take credit away from the team. Paris Tipler has raw exceptional talent that could take him all the way, possibly pro. I am sure if we could do that, and adults would not hold him back, he could do it. I am proud of the EPE team as a whole, but I am discouraged because it is hard for African-American kids to get praise. I am just a concerned aunt and I am proud of you. Keep up the good work.

Due to inability to make out the names, they were omitted. Let us remind you to speak clearly, and if names are difficult, to spell them to avoid error. You can also mail your speakout comments in to The Standard Democrat, 205 S. New Madrid, Sikeston, Mo. 6380l.

My dad passed away and the family was presented a flag. I need a display case and I have no idea who in Sikeston may have one. Can someone help me? Please leave your name and number in speakout or if its a business, please let me know who you are.

Insult to animals

I was absolutely appalled by the trash downtown after the parade. What kind of people have animals become that would create such a mess? That would be an insult to most animals. The cat is very tidy. And according to the Bible, Proverbs 26:11, even the dog will return to take care of his own mess. Perhaps the hog is the closest animal to those who littered our town. Shame on you. Just a note to our City, a suggestion, maybe we could place some temporary trash cans along the route on the day of the parade. Thank you.

I would like to say congratulations to the first black Miss Sikeston, Jessica Harrington. We are very proud of you, and we know that you will carry yourself well in your community and throughout the rest of your career. May God be with you and bless you. Hold your head up high and walk proud. This is history for blacks in Sikeston and the surrounding communities. There is a lot of good young people living on the west end of town. They come from good families, you have proven that. Congratulations again. We love you.

The sound of music?

I would like to make a comment about the Cotton Carnival in Sikeston. For all of 61 years they have been there. My mother is 89 years old and she loves to go out and eat the fish sandwiches and hamburgers and she loves the good old country music or gospel music. This year they never had nothing. She is hoping she can live another year, so they can have some country music or something while she sits out there and eats. Can you please let the members of the American Legion know?

I was calling about that charity game at Scott County Central. It's a game for a good cause and I'm glad that the area in Southeast Missouri could contribute to the victims of Hurricane Rita and Katrina. But, there's something missing out of the whole deal. It's a great cause, but Richland and Bell City should have been mentioned also.
