Sikeston freshmen beat Twin Rivers; eighth graders rout Charleston
POPLAR BLUFF -- The Sikeston freshman basketball team won in the first round of the Poplar Bluff Tournament on Monday.
Sikeston routed Twin Rivers 40-17 to improve to 7-1 on the season. The Bulldogs will play tomorrow against Poplar Bluff at 6 p.m.
The Bulldogs took a 10-4 lead and were never challenged in the game as they extended the lead to 18-8 by halftime and 32-11 heading into the fourth quarter.
Courvirseya Strickland led the team with 10 points. Richard Andrews had eight points while Adrian Dixon and Dominic Fondon each had six points.
But it was a slam dunk by the 6-foot-5 Fondon in the first quarter that sparked the team to the victory according to coach Chris Sarakas.
"Dominic's dunk got the team going and it really picked everybody up," said Sarakas. "That's his third dunk this year and when he gets those down, the kids really get fired up."
Sikeston 61, Charleston 28
SIKESTON -- The Sikeston 8th grade basketball team kept its undefeated season going with a 61-28 victory against Charleston on Monday at the Sikeston Middle School.
Sikeston jumped out to a 17-8 first quarter lead and extended it to 35-13 by halftime and 51-21 heading into the final frame.
Eli Jackson led Sikeston with 27 points followed up by Dwayne Harris with 19 points. Jaqualin Wiggins chipped in with eight points.
Sikeston's 8th grade team is now 7-0 on the season.
In the B game, Sikeston defeated Charleston 45-23. Sikeston led 11-3 after one quarter and 23-13 at halftime. They continued to pull away in the second half for the victory. The Sikeston B team is now 1-0 on the season.
Alex Clark led the team with 15 points followed by Dario Lewis with 12 points.
Sikeston's 8th grade A and B teams will travel to play Kennett today at 6 p.m. They both will play at Charleston on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Kelly 50, Sikeston 43
CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Sikeston J.V. basketball team fell to 7-3 on the season as they lost to Kelly's junior varsity 50-43 in the Cape Central J.V. Tournament.
Kelly led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter, but Sikeston tied it at 25-25 heading into halftime.
Kelly took a 39-35 lead into the fourth quarter.
Kelly's Levi Felter led all scorers with 22 points, including five 3-pointers.
Sikeston was led by Stephen Jackson's 15 points. James Bonner had 12 points with nine rebounds. Brandon Washington added 10 points.
Sikeston was just 1-of-15 from 3-point range in the game.
Sikeston will play Perryville tomorrow in the tournament at 7 p.m.
