SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Lady Bulldogs volleyball team lost its match with Poplar Bluff in straight sets on Thursday at the Sikeston Field House.

The Lady Mules took control early in game one, then reeled off the final six points, to cruise to a 25-11 win.

In the second contest, Sikeston hung around, trailing by just one at 10-9, before the Mules went on a 14-1 run for a commanding 24-10 lead.

The Bulldogs, with match point looming, then turned in their best stretch of play, rallying for five straight points. The final score was 25-15.

The Bulldogs (3-6) showed continued improvement in their service game, although they had two crucial, momentum-killing errors in game two.

A lack of consistency spurred by unforced floor errors and poor court coverage throughout the match throttled the Bulldogs' chances.

Martika Davis and Quinn Kaiser led Sikeston with six and five kills, respectively. Rachel Beydler had the Bulldogs' lone service ace.

The Sikeston junior varsity also fell in straight sets, 25-18, 25-16.

Sikeston hosts Bloomfield today at 6 p.m. with JV and varsity matches.

SIKESTON -- Sikeston's junior varsity softball team captured its first win of the season on Wednesday.

Sikeston defeated East Prairie 3-1, behind Emily Coffee's no-hit pitching.

The Lady Bulldogs (1-6) split five hits between five players in the three-inning game.

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston ninth grade football team lost its season opener at home on Thursday with a 21-0 loss to Dexter.

Dexter took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a Seth McBride touchdown reception.

Dexter tacked on a safety when Sikeston had a bad snap on a punt and the punter fell on the loose ball to make it 8-0.

Dexter extended the lead to 15-0 when Bearcat quarterback Jared Stephens fumbled on a sneak into the end zone, but one of his teammates recovered as time expired in the third quarter.

The Bearcats added one final score in the fourth quarter on a Nick Hessling 1-yard run.
