SIKESTON - A small 8-year-old Sikeston lad, when visiting his neighbor's house recently, was given 7-Up to drink, astonished the host by saying he'd prefer a little whiskey with the drink. So it goes.
BENTON - Scott County Rep. Tony Heckemeyer expressed concern over recent Scott County voter apathy. "The light vote cast was due to the people's apathy and not being informed about the issues," Heckemeyer said. "And also, the news media fell down in reporting to them."

SIKESTON - The third annual class of the practical nurses training program received caps for completing the first 12 weeks of training in a ceremony last night at the First Christian Church. There were 18 in the class. The next 32 weeks will be spent in hospital training.
PORTAGEVILLE - If approved, it would be a first for the state of Missouri. Citizens of Portageville met for over two hours Tuesday evening to discuss the feasibility of forming their own school district. More than 250 persons filled the auditorium of the Pikey Middle School to discuss pros and cons of splitting from the New Madrid County R-1 School District at a special election Feb. 4.

NEW MADRID - New Madrid, a tourist's destination? It sure is, according to the Missouri Division of Tourism and Marian Bock, the city's economic developer. Bock presented two resolutions dealing with tourism for the council's approval. The resolutions are part of a funding request to provide continued marketing of New Madrid as a tourism stop.
