Purchase of new trucks is approved

CHARLESTON -- Mississippi County commissioners approved the purchase of two new trucks for the Mississippi County Sheriff's Department during the regular County Commission meeting Thursday.

The bid must now be reviewed by U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development officials for final approval.

County Clerk Junior DeLay explained the purchases are being funded through the a Rural Development grant which will cover $30,000 with the balance being funded locally.

Galemore Motor Company in Charleston was the low bidder offering a 2005 Dodge Durango XST 4x4 for $22,100 and a 2005 Dodge 4x4 quad-cab pickup for $24,500. "So the county will have to pay $16,600," DeLay said.

The bids offered 2006 models as well. "The sheriff noticed the warranty package on the 2005 is better than the 2006 warranty package," DeLay said.

Commissioners also approved a five-year, 100,000-mile bumper-to-bumper extended warranty on the Durango for around $2,200. "They didn't have an exact dollar figure," DeLay said.

In other business Thursday, commissioners discussed road grading methods used by the county's highway department.

Commissioner Martin Lucas said there are some roads where operators are grading the crowns off the center and creating berms on the shoulder of the road. "When it rains it causes the water to pond in the middle of the roads," DeLay said.

Commissioners agreed road graders need to pull the shoulders to the middle of roads in summer months to restore crowns so roads drain in the wet seasons.

"They're going to discuss this with the highway engineer," DeLay said.
