ORAN -- The South Pemiscot Lady Bulldogs visited the Oran Lady Eagles on Thursday night, where the home-town Lady Eagles won in double digits 60-
46.
Oran started a little flat, as they trailed from the opening tip. But, with 4 minutes left to play in the second quarter they saw their first lead and never looked back. The Lady Eagles led by 11 at halftime, and 18 after the third quarter.
Oran head coach Adam Friga was pleased with his team's performance, especially at the free throw line, where the Lady Eagles improved to 24-for-
35.
"We've been working on the free throws this week," Friga said. "We showed tremendous improvement over the last few game's (free throw shooting)."
Friga's thoughts on the game as a whole were a little mixed.
"It was sloppy," Friga said. "We've got to get better. I knew coming in with us having some young kids out there that it would be inconsistent. But, our older kids, they're doing a pretty good job of stepping up and saying positive things and leading too."
"We're not consistent with our play," he added. "Our effort is there, but when you get up 20 (points) on a team, you can't let them back in the ball game. You have to get after them."
One consistency for the Lady Eagles was the play of Cheyenne King and Callie Kielhofner.
King had 21 points in the victory, going 7-for-11 at the charity stripe, and adding eight rebounds, four steals and an assist.
Kielhofner, who played with foul trouble for the entire second half, scored 14 points, with seven rebounds, seven steals and three assists.
Ellen Sikes and Taylor Tenkhoff each added five rebounds in the win for the Lady Eagles, while Sikes scored seven points and Tenkhoff added three.
Friga saw another fine performance off the bench from freshman Abbey Anderson.
Anderson only had six points, but controlled the ball with authority for Oran, and had four assists and nine steals.
Friga commented that Anderson has the skills to succeed, and that she is working on getting it all put together to help the team.
South Pemiscot was led by Mary Hollywood, who scored 16 points, and Samantha Davidson who scored 12.
Up next for Oran is a road game at Perryville.
"We've got Perryville Monday," Friga said. "That'll be a good road game for us. It's far away and I'm sure they'll have a decent team. It'll be good for us and will help us prepare for districts."
