CHARLESTON - The Commercial Street Improvement project at Charleston funded through Federal Aid Urban and local money, is proceeding on schedule by workers from Cowan Construction of Sikeston. Underground work (water and sewer installation) were completed about two weeks ago by the crews. Remaining work to be done on the three-block-long project is concrete work on the street, sidewalks and private drives.

NEW MADRID - Kandi Barksdale of East Prairie and Deidre DeLaney of Sikeston have been invited to twirl at the opening ceremonies of the 1988 World's Fair Expo 88 in Brisbane, Australia. Miss Barksdale is the 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Barksdale. Miss DeLaney is the daughter of Donna DeLaney. They are among eight girls selected.

SIKESTON - Doris Skelton of Sikeston was the Standard-Democrat's first local Power Points winner. Presenting her a check of $50 was Dennis Fraser of the Bottle Shop, one of the participating Power Point sponsors. Skelton's score of 119 points earned her the top local prize, while George Lane of Waynesville was the state winner of week one's jackpot of $1,000. Lane finished with 132 points.

SIKESTON - Two of Scott County Central High School's sophomores, Amanda Franklin and Chanica Williams, began learning what it takes to be successful leaders at a Leadership in Practice conference held July 9-11 at Mexico, Mo.
