DEXTER -- Virginia Smothers, 75, died March 21, 2007, at the Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
Born Nov. 19, 1931, in Cleveland, Ark., daughter of the late William "Lonnie" and Katie Mae Montgomery Rhoades, she graduated from Bernie High School in 1949 and drove a school bus for 20 years for the Ferguson-Florissant school district and 15 years for the Dexter school district. She was a member of the Dexter Church of Christ.
On June 1, 1948, in Piggott, Ark., she married Edward L. "Bus" Smothers who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Lonnie "Ed" and Patsy Smothers of St. Louis; three daughters and one son-in-law, Regina Cook of Chicago, Louida and George Anton of Cahokia, Ill., and Jody Garner of Dexter; one brother, Kenneth Rhoades of Ironton; one sister, Erma Brooks of New Madrid; and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Billy Howard Copeland, G.W. Rhoades, Dewey Rhoades and Huey Rhoades; and by one son-in-law, Donald Garner.
Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today at the Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday with Jim Faughn officiating.
Burial will follow in the Caroline Dowdy Cemetery in Dexter.
