SIKESTON -- John C. Matthews Sr., 83, died July 28, 2007, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

Born Jan. 10, 1924, in Sikeston, son of the late Jack and Elsie Sullivan Matthews, he was a memer of First United Methodist Church and had been an agent for Standard Oil Company for 32 years until his retirement.

On Oct. 9, 1943, he married Lois Hammonds, who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: two sons, Clay Matthews of Jackson and Rodney Matthews of Sikeston; one daughter and son-in-law, Rita and Harry Philip of Jackson; two brothers, Larry Matthews of Dexter and Lyman Matthews of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; two grandchildren, Martha Ann Stallings of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Matthew D. Wiethop of Jackson; three great-grandchildren, Alex Stallings, Catherine Stallings and Zachary Stallings, all of Colorado Springs; and three step-grandchildren, Scott Philip, Darin Philip and Brett Philip.

He was preceded in death by: one sister, Irene Hunt; four brothers, Jack Matthews, Reece Matthews, Joe Matthews and Jim Matthews; and one grandson, John Clay Matthews III.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston, where services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Geoff Posegate, senior pastor of First United Methodist Church will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Jeremiah Reeve, associate pastor of First United Methodist Church.

Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery in Sikeston.

Pallbearers will be: Bryce Matthews, Murray Sullivan, Terry Bryant, Benny Eason, Matthew Wiethop and Harry Philip.
