POPLAR BLUFF -- The Sikeston soccer team posted its sixth straight victory on Monday night as they defeated Poplar Bluff 2-1 in double overtime.
Sikeston's Blake Taylor scored at the 97:00 mark to secure the victory for the Bulldogs.
His goal came on a crossing assist from Tim Hart.
"Timmy made a great cross to Blake and he put it in the back of the net," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long.
Hart scored a goal on an assist from Sam Raines earlier in the game at the 24:
00 mark to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead which they would take into halftime.
Poplar Bluff's Chris Stevens tied the score at 1-1 on a goal at the 58:00 mark.
The Mules peppered Sikeston goalkeeper Scott Droddy all night, but Stevens' goal was the only one the junior let slip through.
Droddy finished with 24 saves as Poplar Bluff out-shot the Bulldogs 25-16.
"It was a big game by Scott Droddy, maybe the best game of his career," said Long. "He made some unbelievable saves tonight and it kept us in the ballgame. I thought we played pretty good defense. They have some great shooters and they beat us 3-0 earlier in the year, but we kept them in check somewhat today."
Sikeston (11-11-1) is seeded third in the Class 1, District 1 Tournament held in Sikeston this year. The Bulldogs will play sixth-seeded Windsor on Saturday at 2 p.m.
In the junior varsity game, Sikeston defeated the Mules 2-1. Mikey Botkin scored both goals for Sikeston and Stuart Strom provided both assists. The Sikeston J.V. team is 7-7-2 on the season.
