SIKESTON - Competition can be healthy. It can bring community pride and identity.
But, cautioned Buz Sutherland at Thursday's meeting of the Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce, in the world of economic development, cooperation is the key. As the new director of the Southeast Missouri Development Alliance, Sutherland will work to build cooperation and the economies of Scott, Mississippi, New Madrid, Stoddard, Pemiscot and Dunklin counties.
Explaining as globalization continues, communities are no longer competing with neighboring counties or even states for a new industry. "Today it is nationwide or even international," he said.
According to Sutherland, by banding together the counties are developing a regional marketing strategy. "We want to develop a brand," he said. "We want to brand the Bootheel as a significant place an industry can be drawn into or where existing businesses can translate this branding to their bottom line."
Sutherland praised the work of those area leaders who formulated the strategy behind SMEDA. These individuals, he said, understood that what is good for one community can benefit all the area when it comes to economic development.
While there are many challenges ahead for the Bootheel and its residents, the new director said it remains SMEDA's vision to bring not only jobs and economic prosperity to the area but also improve the quality of life. Also SMEDA intends to work with existing industries to look for ways to promote them and their products.
"It won't happen overnight but the right people are at the table and we are encouraging others to join in," he said.
He also emphasized SMEDA will work with local communities and counties who are trying to locate possible industries.
"We want to be a gatekeeper, a resource provider for existing businesses, too," he said. "We can't always save a business, but we can, as a town or region, protect them as best we can."
Another goal of SMEDA is to encourage entrepreneurship, by providing an atmosphere that encourages new ideas and business start-ups. "We are going to put together an environment to encourage our own entrepreneurs. There are a lot of creative people and we want them to know that if they are willing to work hard we will help them put their dreams together," he said.
In his new capacity, Sutherland said he will be taking a "hard look" at Southeast Missouri and will be working on a comprehensive strategic plan. "I invite you to be a part of that," he said to Chamber members.
