An excellent choice for University post

Sunday, May 27, 2007

Filling the shoes of departed University of Missouri President Elson Floyd will be a tough job. Southeast Missouri native Kenny Hulshof, however, seems to be a perfect fit. Hulshof revealed this week that he was under consideration for the university post. We can only hope those making this critical decision recognize the unique value that Hulshof could bring to this position.

Hulshof has served the last decade in Congress representing northeast and central Missouri. His name has been mentioned prominently for a number of statewide offices in Missouri. But what's important to us is that Hulshof has deep southeast Missouri roots and his honesty and integrity are beyond reproach. By every definition, Hulshof is one of the good guys. His character, dedication and respect would be an amazing asset to the University of Missouri system.

Hulshof graduated from Mizzou and has remained committed to the school throughout his personal and professional life. We can think of no one who could better represent the University and our state. His leadership could well take the University system to even greater heights.

Some pundits throughout the state have questioned Hulshof's higher education credentials. One newspaper even said Hulshof was too honest and too nice to tackle such an important position. Rubbish!

Kenny Hulshof is a rare breed in the arena of public service. He says what he means and means what he says. He's a tireless worker who could carry with honor the title of University President.

Those under consideration for this important post are truly in an elite class. But Hulshof brings that special something that can combine his political skills, his statewide reputation and his impressive character to boost the University system to the next level of achievement. We in this state are truly blessed to have Kenny Hulshof as a candidate for this post. He could provide a legacy unparalleled in the school's history. And given the chance, he will do just that.

It's actually hard for me to believe that Hulshof would give up his powerful seat in Congress to take on the presidency. But that says much about his dedication to this state and his interest in our future direction. Opportunities like this come but rarely. I sincerely hope those making this important decision recognize the golden opportunity Hulshof could provide.

I once thought Kenny Hulshof would someday be president of the United States. He has that potential. Once you meet him you quickly realize the true stature of this dynamic leader. He has that special gift that comes along rarely. We hope to soon call him the new president of the University of Missouri.
