SIKESTON - Nota D. Ables, 86, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at the Sikeston Convalescent Center. She was born Sept. 27, 1920, in East Prairie to the late John Wesley and Bird Cooper Dover. Graduating from St. Louis City Hospital School of Nursing in 1941, she spent the next 50 years of her life serving her community as well as the American Red Cross in the nursing profession. ...

SIKESTON - Nota D. Ables, 86, died at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, 2007, at the Sikeston Convalescent Center.

She was born Sept. 27, 1920, in East Prairie to the late John Wesley and Bird Cooper Dover. Graduating from St. Louis City Hospital School of Nursing in 1941, she spent the next 50 years of her life serving her community as well as the American Red Cross in the nursing profession. She served one term as Scott County Democratic Committee Woman and was a former member and President of the Sikeston Civic Club. She was a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church.

On July 27, 1946, she married Cline Ables who preceded her in death on July 4, 2003.

Survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Kay Ables of Dexter; three daughters and one son-in-law; Gretta Walton of East Jordan, Mich., Jo Cavanaugh of Grand Blanc, Mich. and Marilyn and Dr. Bill Boyce of Sikeston; one sister, Hazel Howe of St. Louis; two brothers, Durward Dover of Oran and Veachel Dover of Morehouse; 11 grandchildren, Sam, Matthew and Katie Walton of East Jordan, Kelli Walton of Evanston, Ill., Janice Cavanaugh Keeler of Lebanon, Vance Woodham of Fenton, Melissa Wilson of Milford, Conn., Tera Ables Bullard of Shirley, Ark., Wesley Ables of Cape Girardeau, Dr. Sarah Boyce Sawyer of Birmingham, Ala. and Aaron Boyce of Marion, Ark.

She was also preceded in death by one infant sister; and six brothers, Shirley, Milbourn, Gilbert, J.C., N.D. and Harley Dover; also one grandson, Michael Cavanaugh; and one great-grandson, Charles Zachary Cavanaugh.

Friends may call after 11 a.m. until the funeral hour at 1 p.m. Monday at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The Rev. Jeff Posegate, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Sikeston, will officiate.

Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Don Ables, Dr. Bill Boyce, Aaron Boyce, Wesley Ables, Vance Woodham and Scott Sawyer.
