SIKESTON -- The Sikeston youth who was shot this weekend during a party at the Lincoln-Gloryland Community Center is reported to be recovering.

At approximately 10:55 p.m. Friday the Sikeston Department of Public Safety responded to a report of a disturbance with weapons at the old Lincoln school.

Immediately upon arrival, officers became involved in two foot pursuits. During the pursuits, the officers heard several shots fired and located a subject who was shot at the corner Westgate and Osage.

The victim, a 14-year-old juvenile, had received a gunshot wound to the upper thigh area with the entry to the back of the thigh and the exit wound in the front of the thigh, according to the DPS report.

Ambulance service was dispatched to treat the injured person. The victim was later transported by helicopter to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau for treatment.

"I understand he's doing OK," said Capt. John Martin of the DPS. "They said the injury was non-life-threatening and he is recovering. I just don't know if he has been released or not."

The incident is still under investigation by DPS's Criminal Investigation Unit.
