SIKESTON - Mr. and Mrs. Paul Witt entertained with a dinner party in honor of Mrs. Witt's father, M.D. Atherton, who celebrated his birthday that day.
SIKESTON - Prospects for a good cotton crop diminished with rain that struck the area Saturday and Sunday and left several fields covered with water. A total of 8 inches of rain fell in Sikeston on Saturday and Sunday, bringing the total for the month to 12.25 inches.

SIKESTON - Sharon Hatley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Atlas Hatley, will play the featured piano part in Don Gillis' "Fields of Summer" with the Sikeston Senior High School Band at the high school band shell. The concert starts at 8 p.m.
PORTAGEVILLE - The latest advancement in computer technology is enabling J.J. Morrison of Portageville to talk with ease for the first time. Disabled since birth, J.J. uses a Minispeak computer which prints out messages as well as "speaks" for the youngster. Jeanette Haubold, instructor for the Orthopedically Handicap Class for the R-1 School District, attached J.J.'s "antenna," which he presses to stop the computer at the proper symbol to say what he chooses.

SIKESTON - Director of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety Dan Hinton has announced the start of the department's residential foot patrol. The foot patrol program will provide added security in residential areas and will also provide a source for citizens to express concern to the officer.
SIKESTON - Students at the Sikeston Department of Public Safety's Citizens Police Academy enjoyed a hands-on exercise at Fire Station 3 on Saturday. "It's a little more complicated that using a garden hose," one of the students commented.
