PORTAGEVILLE - The Southeast Missouri Development Corporation will sponsor a six-county area meeting on outdoor recreation at the University of Missouri Delta Center next Thursday. Sam Jones of East Prairie is chairman of the outdoor recreation committee, and has invited representatives from around the area to attend.

SIKESTON - Not all of the returnable soft drink bottles have dried up in the area. The major groceries of Sikeston have quit accepting the bottles for cost-saving reasons. However, some smaller stores in Sikeston, as well as major grocers in surrounding communities, still carry the returnables.

NEW MADRID - Activities are under way for the first Riverbend Jaycees Country Fair at the Hunter-Dawson City Park on Highway U. Friday evening will be highlighted by the selection of Miss Riverbend Jaycee. The contest will begin at 8 p.m. on the stage in the park.

SIKESTON - Two pair of Nike tennis shoes and a 1996 Harley-Davidson motorcycle were reported stolen from a residence at 708 Allen Boulevard. According to information provided by the Department of Public Safety, sometime between 8:45 p.m. Tuesday and 1 a.m. Wednesday, the vehicle was taken from the carport area. In addition, a window was broken out of the house, allegedly by a brick, where the tennis shoes, valued at $89 each, were found missing. The motorcycle is valued at $20,000.
