CHARLESTON - Gladys Greer Newman, 93, died at 12:40 a.m. Feb. 20, 2007, at the Sikeston Convalescent Center.

Born Aug. 31, 1913, at East Prairie, to the late Jim Ben and Delphia Murphy Greer, she was employed at St. Louis City Hospital after graduating from the St. Louis Nurse Training Program. In 1963 she returned to Mississippi County and began working at the Missouri Delta Medical Center where she became nursing supervisor of the pediatric department until her "forced" retirement at age 70. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Charleston and its Winsome Sunday school class.

She married Floyd Newman who preceded her in death in 1963.

Also preceding her in death were four brothers, Calvin Greer, Earl Greer, Selma Greer and Everett Greer; two sisters, Lucille Lemons and Geneva Finley; and three infant siblings.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews: Gladys Jane Goodin, Mike Finley, June Drinkwater, Diane Caid, Gary Finley, Sharon Knight, Ellen Graham, Joe Greer, Bob Greer, Willie Lemons and Jerry Greer.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. Thursday at the McMikle Funeral Home in Charleston. The Rev. Michael Brewer, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Charleston, will officiate.

Burial will follow in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery near Charleston.
