SIKESTON - Lee Austin Bowman and Charles Wyatt were on the starting team of the University of Missouri "B" squad football team. The team defeated Ottumwa, Iowa, last weekend.

40 years ago

BENTON - The first portion for the 1967-68 school year totaled $776,145 County Treasurer Hess Porter reported. This is 60 percent of the total amount which area schools will receive from Haskell Holman, state auditor.


SIKESTON - Herschel Deal, a member of the Sikeston Fire Department for four years, has resigned and gone into business. Deal has worked for 11 years for the city. He plans to open a moving and delivery service.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Bootheel Humane Society has announced Karen Tucker is the new shelter attendant at the local facility, 328 N. West St. Miss Tucker will conduct humane society work at the shelter and assist Department of Public Safety Humane Officer Sherry Thies.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston Public School's Area Vocational School received a 1996 Chevrolet Camaro from the Chevrolet Motor Division. The blue Camaro will help the students enrolled in vocational classes at the school learn more about the latest in automotive technology. It was Jarvis Motor Company of Sikeston who recommended to General Motors that SPS receive the car, a gesture for which School Superintendent Dr. Robert Buchanan is appreciative.


SIKESTON - Triangle Wire and Cable sponsored their employees in a "Big Buck" contest during the 1995 hunting season. David Hyde received a shoulder deer mount from Bowman's Taxidermy for his first place deer. Second place was awarded to Larry Western.


BENTON - The Kelly-Benton FFA held its first meeting of the new school year Aug. 28 to discuss crop and ag machine project entries for Neighbor Day.
