SIKESTON - A formal opening of Hale's Jewelry and Optical Store, 120 N. New Madrid St., will be held Sept. 19, according to the announcement by Geo. L. Hale.

SIKESTON - The opening of the 22nd annual Cotton Carnival in Sikeston faces an overcast sky with a possibility of showers. Prospects for the week-long event are anything but gloomy. Although the downpouring we received Sunday was drenching, it was more rain than the area has received since May.


SIKESTON - Rain again interfered and caused poor attendance at the Junior Chamber of Commerce Jackpot Horse Show at the rodeo fairgrounds.

SIKESTON - The reopening of the Sikeston Trade Fair also brought a new look. Don Lowe, owner of the trade fair on Blodgett Road, said the 40 percent of the building damaged by the May 15 tornado has been reconstructed. "It's a little bit fancier," Lowe said.


BENTON - The Scott County R-4 Board of Education on Monday approved the handbook for the new gifted program in the school district. The program will be called the ACE Program (Advanced Curriculum and Enrichment Program). Accelerated students in grades K-8 will be invited to participate.

BLOOMFIELD - "History of Stoddard County" by Robert H. Forister is now available in its third reprint. "My little pamphlet turned out to be a best seller," said Forister. "We quickly sold out of two printings." "The History of Stoddard County" can be found in the Cape Girardeau Library and even far away places like the New York City Library, according to Forister.


CHARLESTON - The Sikeston tennis team lost in all categories when they competed against Charleston on Tuesday. Sikeston coach Lynne DeWitt explained, "Charleston is good."
