This is in regard to the Cott Beverage Co. laying off a bunch of their workers. I think everybody needs to contact Wal-Mart (because Cott Beverages is the one that makes Sam's Choice colas) and tell Wal-Mart Corporation to call Cott Beverages and tell them to keep the employees that they have and not cut the jobs or we are just going to boycott Wal-Mart stuff. This affects a lot of people here in Sikeston. It is going to affect the economy as well. It's time to stand up for the common workers...

Bottled-up

This is in regard to the Cott Beverage Co. laying off a bunch of their workers. I think everybody needs to contact Wal-Mart (because Cott Beverages is the one that makes Sam's Choice colas) and tell Wal-Mart Corporation to call Cott Beverages and tell them to keep the employees that they have and not cut the jobs or we are just going to boycott Wal-Mart stuff. Not an American patriot

I was reading in the Democrat in Your View, submitted by D. Barnes. It quoted Claire McCaskill as saying that she knows Senator Obama to be a loving family man, a devout Christian and a man who is proud of his country. Well, that's true, but his country is not the United States. I do believe he's proud of his country, but it's not the same country we serve in. As far as being a Christian and a family man, I cannot say that he might not be that, but he is not patriotic to our country. He's patriotic to his country. I don't really like everything about John McCain, but I'd rather pick him. He has been in the war, he has defended his country. And he, like myself, has a son that is over in Iraq fighting for our rights.

Too old to cut the mustard

I was over in East Prairie a few days ago, on Second St., when I noticed two elderly women. They had to be in their late 60s, early 70s, taking turn pushing a lawn mower, that was about 18-inches mowing width. They had towels wrapped around their necks to keep cool. There was this middle-aged woman sitting on the porch in a swing, smoking one cigarette after another, watching these women mow their yard. I asked the neighbor, "What's up with this?" The neighbor said they were volunteers from the church. This is a shame. The pastor should be ashamed of himself!

Physical and mental exercise

This is in response to Having a ball in Wednesday's paper on June 25. The person was complaining about children in summer school having 45 minutes of basketball in the morning before classes start and 45 minutes in the afternoon after classes are over. To quote, "I'm very concerned and very frustrated. I don't know if other parents whose kids are going to summer school are having this problem. If they are, I think it needs to be addressed by the school board." I would like totally disagree with this person. In today's world, with PlayStation, Nintendo and video games, children do not get enough exercise. I think it's great that the school allows them to get exercise and play basketball and get their metabolism up before they go to class. They burn up a little energy which is good for their health.

No sense of humor

Re: Mickey Mouse and Cat Woman - Sighhhhh. . .Yes, there is karma, but there is also something called "tongue in cheek" and I was attempting to make a point, with a bit of humor, that cats were not something to lightly be "gotten rid of" - much less broadcasting that information in SpeakOut. I'm sorry if I offended anyone, and I will say without sarcasm or humor that, no, I do not have a direct link to God and do not stand in judgment of anyone. I have, in fact, taken in two kittens so far and am working towards a third, that will be adopted by someone who was not Mickey Mouse, but possibly was Cat Woman, in a previous life (oops, there I go again, I can't help myself). This will directly reduce the number of half-feral cats in the neighborhood when "kitten season" rolls around next year. I plan to keep it up. In all seriousness, there are circumstances when an elderly resident dies or enters a nursing home and their pets are left to fend for themselves; this has been the case near me and possibly you and the original SpeakOut caller as well. My point was (Heaven knows I can't risk any more attempts at humor) - folks, don't complain! But then, I guess that's what SpeakOut is for, hmmm? "If you 're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" is true here. Find out if the cat has an owner -ask around. (I guess a group effort to spay/neuter and release would fall on deaf ears to non-(but definitely Heaven bound, by all means) cat-people. And yes, if all else fails, the Humane Society is a last resort. I honestly thought SpeakOut readers had a better sense of humor. Sorry, Cat Woman
