New technique offered keeps MDMC on the cutting edge

SIKESTON -- In another first for the hospital, Missouri Delta Medical Center is now offering Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery for gall bladder surgery patients.

"It is exciting because this is something Missouri Delta Medical Center has before anyone else in this area," said Sharon Urhahn, director of marketing for MDMC. "There is nobody trained to do it in Cape Girardeau, nobody in Poplar Bluff."

Dr. Ly Phan, general surgeon at MDMC, attended two training courses, one in Chicago and the other in Tennessee, to learn the procedure which has just started to be used in hospitals over the last year or so.

"It's more of an advanced laparoscopic skill," Phan said. "It is a new, innovative technique."
