Commissioners set to approve a new nuisance ordinance

Friday, December 11, 2009

CHARLESTON -- The bill for Mississippi County's new nuisance ordinance is coming in for less than originally bid -- and does not make owning pit bulls illegal.

Commissioners reviewed during their regular weekly meeting Thursday the $3,442 bill for drafting the ordinance from the Cunningham, Vogel and Rost, P.C., legal firm in St. Louis.

The cost was originally going to be closer to $5,500 but came in lower as the county was able to provide a less-inclusive ordinance for the legal firm to revise.

Commissioners are now just waiting to receive the final printed copy of the ordinance so they can put it into effect.

In related businesses, Commissioner Steve Jones said some residents appear to be confused about the intent of the ordinance as it pertains to dogs as they have asked him about specific breeds being banned in the county.

"It is not breed specific," Commissioner Robert Jackson said.

Presiding Commissioner Jim Blumenberg said the intent of that section of the nuisance ordinance is just to get residents to "put their dog up."
