ORAN -- Battling the wind and rain, the Oran Eagles and visiting Scott City Rams managed to put together five innings of baseball Tuesday before an afternoon thunderstorm put a stop to play.

With the Rams holding a two-run lead and Brett Dirnberger up to bat to start the top of sixth, lightning streaked across the sky, resulting in a halt to play that would eventually give Scott City the 4-2 win.

"The rain held off long enough," Ram's coach Lance Amick said. "Sometimes this stuff goes against you where the rain comes but today it went in our favor."

Oran took the lead early in the contest with Adam Schaefer singling in the first to bring home both of the Eagles' two runs in the inning.

Scott City answered in the third with two of their own as Wyatt Martin sent a solo shot over the left center field fence followed later in the inning by pitcher Skylar Cobb doubling to bring home Landon Robert from second.

As the two teams entered the fifth still knotted up, it was Cobb again helping his own cause, hitting another double with one out to bring in Justin Modglin from second and give the Rams the 3-2 lead.

Next up to bat, Chris Limbaugh gave the Rams some insurance with a single to left to drive home Cobb for the final run of the evening.

"It didn't look good at first but we settled down and the second time through the order we started hitting the ball a lot better," Cobb said.

In earning the win, Cobb went the five full innings, allowing two hits and four walks while striking nine.

"It looked like his fast ball had a little zip on it today," Amick said. "His breaking ball was flat at times, sharp at others. Wasn't real consistent with it, but it was good enough."

Taking the loss, Zac Chasteen also went the full five innings, striking out six while allowing seven hits and a walk.

Happy with Chasteen's performance, Oran coach Mitch Wood points to timely hitting as a key reason for the Eagle's loss.

"The kid we had pitched a pretty good game, kept us in the ball game." he said. "We're just not getting timely hits right now.

"Every game we've seen we've seen pretty good pitching and we have to get ready for that."

Next up Scott City host visiting Dexter today at 4 p.m. while Oran will head on the road to face Oak Ridge this Friday, also at 4 p.m.
