CHAFFEE -- The Chaffee Red Devil Classic baseball tournament is notorious for rain outs. The last four years have been halted by the wet stuff and the first day of the 2010 edition was no different.

"Once again it seems like we're bringing some weather with us," Chaffee head coach Brian Horrell said. "It's been four years in-a-row that this thing got rained out.

"The farmers probably like to see the Red Devil Classic on the schedule."

Although they did get the first three games played involving Chaffee, Dexter and Oran, the last game of the day between Saxony Lutheran and Senath-Hornersville was called off.

The Red Devils pounded the Egyptian, Ill., Pharaohs 17-4 in the first game at Chaffee as they wasted little time putting runs on the board.

Chaffee (6-6) scored six runs in the top of the first inning. A bases-clearing double by Andrew Terhune was the biggest hit of the first giving the Red Devils a very quick 5-0 lead. Kamryn Johnson made it an even six runs just two batters later with an RBI single.

They went right back to work in the second inning with another six runs on five hits. Alex Davie drove in two with a double while Terhune knocked in his fourth and fifth RBIs of the day with a two-run single.

All together the Red Devils had 16 hits.

"It was nice to see us get the bats going," Horrell said. "Our bats have been getting a little better here lately so, it was good to see us get off to a good start offensively."

Davie received the start and the win for the Red Devils and went two innings before giving up two runs to the Pharaohs.

Andrew Dooley led Chaffee with three hits including a double. Davie had two doubles while Terhune and Trevor Cannon each went 2-for-4 with a double. Johnson and Jared Walker also had two hits as well.

Dexter 7, Shawnee 1

CHAFFEE -- In a game that was two outs from being completely finished, the Dexter Bearcats defeated Shawnee, Ill. 7-1 in 6 1/3 innings before lightning and rain began to settle in.

A fairly quiet first four innings that went scoreless for each team abruptly ended in the fifth when both Dexter and Shawnee finally tallied runs.

Shawnee struck first with their only run on the day in the top of the fifth inning when Tyler Glidewell, who led the Redskins with two hits, singled in Ty McMahon to make it 1-0 Shawnee.

That chased Dexter starter Brandon Stoker off the mound giving way to reliever Landon Hall, who wound up finishing with the win in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Sensing that rain drops weren't too far away, the Bearcats went to work in their half of the fifth scoring six runs on five hits.

A walk to Alex Cliff and then back-to-back singles from Bryn Hester and Ben Mills led to Dexter's first run. Another walk to Sawyer Smith loaded the bases for Corbin Matthews who squeezed a single through the left side of the infield that plated two more.

An RBI single from Tyler George and a 2-RBI single by Cody Stause put the Bearcats up 6-1. Mills drove in his second run of the day in the sixth scoring Stoker from second.

Hall struck out the first batter of the seventh inning and was in the hole 2-0 on the second batter of the inning before a few lightning bolts streaked across the dark sky sending both teams to the dugout and eventually to their buses.

Mills led the Bearcats with three hits, all singles, while Stoker and George each had two hits apiece.

Kody Moore picked up the win for the Eagles, throwing six innings, allowing one unearned run on six hits while striking out seven and walking three. Gabe Kielhofner earned the save for Oran, relieving Trent Irwin who started the final frame.

Kielhofner led Oran (9-6) at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Mac McConnell was also 2-for-4 with an RBI as the Eagles finished with seven hits on the day.
