Scott City track and field team claims Chaffee title
Rams boys placed in the top three in 14 of the 17 events
CHAFFEE -- It wasn't their best day on the track, but for the Scott City Rams even a sub-par performance was good enough for a first place finish at the Chaffee Track and Field Invitational on Thursday afternoon.
"It's obviously a good day when you can win first," Scott City head coach Travis Schiwitz said. "But, in my opinion we didn't run that well today. Hopefully, we do better going into the conference on Monday and then we carry that into districts."
The Rams' boys squad finished in the top three in all but three of the 17 events giving them a commanding total of 135.5 points. The second place finisher, Malden, ended with a 105.5.
As a team, they won the 4x200 relay while Brandon Shemonia swept the distance events with a time of 4:41 in the 1600 and 10:42 in the 3200.
The Charleston Bluejays ended in third place with 86 points. Charleston senior Deonte Jones swept the jumping events winning all three. He won the high jump by a full inch over New Madrid County Central's William Bledsoe and the triple jump by just a half of an inch with a 42-0 jump.
The host Chaffee Red Devils ended their meet in fourth place with 63 points. Their 4x800 team finished first while Jordan Yahn continued his impressive season in the 800 with another first place finish. Andrew Terhune ended the 400 in third place as well.
"It's almost May so you always want to see those times come down," Chaffee boys coach Tyson Moyers said. "We ran pretty much what we've been running here lately and we're kind of at a plateau right now.
"I think we're going to bust out of that next week in the conference and district."
This year's version of the Chaffee Invitational was split into two days; Monday was the for the girls and Thursday was for the boys. The Chaffee Lady Devils came away with first place in an exciting finish on Monday while the boys' ended with a content fourth place.
"It went real well," Moyers said about the week's festivities. "We have great coaches and great teachers here at Chaffee that help us run the meet. The coaches from other schools help us do times and it makes it run a lot smoother."
For most of the 11 teams present, this meet will be used as a measuring stick for the conference and district meets that are rapidly approaching next week.
"We'll just have to make sure that we're fully rested," Schiwitz said. "We need to make sure that everything we do we do it with all that we have."
