CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Sikeston Bulldog track and field team placed second in both the boys and girls squads in the SEMO North Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon at Abe Stuber Track and Field Complex on the campus of Southeast Missouri State University.
The Sikeston boys ended with a total of 77 points while the girls finished with 61.5.
"It was good competition," Sikeston head coach Terry Flannigan said. "All teams had a chance to win the thing because everybody is really good. It's disappointing but, at the same time, you have to know that it was good competition."
Most of Sikeston's battles came against the Poplar Bluff Mules, who won the boys with a score of 95.5 and the Jackson Lady Indians who won the girls side with a 75.5.
The Bulldogs finished first in four events. Ray Clark won the 200-meter dash while Ismail Johnson won the 400-meter. They won the 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays as well.
Sikeston's first place finishes in the 4x100 and the 4x200-meter relays were helped by way of fill-ins. Clark took the place of an injured Martez Evans, who came up lame in the high jump, in the 4x200. Trey Lewis also filled a spot in the mile relay.
"We stuck Ray (Clark) in the 4x200 and we bettered our time," said Flannigan. "Then, we stuck Trey Lewis in the mile relay and he ran a good split for never running the thing.
"We had a couple of kids step up and show us that they can fill in."
On the girls side, the Lady Bulldogs also finished first in five events.
Tyanne Townsend and Vonterria Applewhite finished one and two in the 100-meter dash. They won both the 4x100 and the 4x200 relays while Betsy Borgsmiller and Jalen Peet won the high jump and triple jump, respectively.
"We did some things pretty good," said Flannigan. "We cut some more times."
Now with the Class 3, District 1 tournament at Hillsboro next week as the only thing left on Sikeston's schedule, Flannigan's assessment of this conference tournament will be a good indication as to where the Bulldogs will rank.
"Now the big one starts," Flannigan said. "If we can hang close and finish high, we know we have a chance at districts. This is just a little indicator of where we stand."
