OCALA, Fla. -- The Sikeston 10-year-old All-Stars watched a 3-1 lead disappear in the late innings as they fell 7-5 to Willamette Valley, Oreg., in the 10-year-old Cal Ripken World Series on Sunday afternoon.

After giving up a single run in the first inning, Sikeston responded in the bottom of the third when Jarred Sandlin hit a 3-run home run, scoring Fred Thatch Jr. and Austin Branch, putting Sikeston ahead 3-1.

The lead held until the top of the fifth inning when the Oregon squad plated three runs to take a 4-3 lead, but the scrappy Sikeston squad responded. Branch and Thatch Jr. both scored with the help of an RBI from Sandlin and Sikeston held a 5-4 lead, three outs away from the win.

Willamette Valley scored three runs in the top of the sixth, however, and then held on to defeat Sikeston 7-5, dropping the Missouri team to 0-2 in pool play.

Will Gilmer took the loss on the mound for Sikeston, giving up six runs, five earned, in two innings. He gave up five hits and two walks while striking out one. Sandlin pitched the first four innings, allowing one run on three hits, walking one and striking out two.

Thatch Jr. had two of the four hits for Sikeston in the contest. Branch and Sandlin had the other two hits for Sikeston with Sandlin driving in four runs.

Sikeston (0-2) will be back in action today at 11:30 p.m. when they take on Middletown, N.J. They will finish pool play on Tuesday when they take on Weimar, Texas, at 6:30 p.m. The top three teams in the five-team pool will advance to a single-elimination tournament that begins on Wednesday evening.
