SCOTT CITY -- After somewhat struggling with swinging the metal, the Scott City Lady Rams needed a big, offensive outburst to maybe get them out of their slump.
Tuesday afternoon against the East Prairie Eagles provided just that as well as a conference title for the Lady Rams in their 18-2 win.
"It was definitely an important one for us," Scott City center fielder Melanie Lacey said after the win. "(This conference title) is probably one of the first one's that I know of.
"We haven't been having our best games lately and we needed to get out here and hit and play good defense. I feel like we did that today."
Scott City pounded out a total of 13 hits and scored 11 runs in the first two innings to get things going. Four players for the Lady Rams had at least two hits on the day as starting pitcher Becky Burger kept the Lady Eagles at bay.
"It was nice to put a big number on the board," Scott City head coach Amy Pobst said. "I thought we did a good job of pitch selection and waiting on a pitch that we could hit and we got a good swing on them.
"Hopefully, we can take this momentum into the rest of this week."
Burger struck out eight East Prairie batters and walked two. She also helped her own cause at the plate with two hits and one RBI.
"Becky has been doing a good job of stepping up and doing her job on the mound," Pobst said. "It's nice to have a one-two punch that we can throw at people."
Scott City (11-6) was led offensively by almost their entire roster; Jenna Cummins (2 hits, 3 RBI), Macey Hall (2 hits 3 RBI), Tana Tetley (2 hits, 2 RBI), Lindsay Kern (2 RBI), Shelbie Rhymer (2 RBI), Alexis Spriggs (2 RBI) and Lacey (3 RBI) who also had the game-ending hit in the fourth inning.
"We've been hitting right at people lately," Lacey said about their offensive struggles. "They finally have been falling."
East Prairie connected for three hits, two of which coming from Savanna Barker. Kailey Turner was given the loss as the starting pitcher for the Lady Eagles.
Next up for each team, Scott City is scheduled to play Jackson today at Jackson while East Prairie goes to Broseley to face Twin Rivers on Monday.
