SIKESTON -- After blinking for more than a decade, the stoplights at the intersection of Malone Avenue and South New Madrid Street now shift from green to yellow to red through the day.

The Missouri Department of Transportation made the switch on Monday, said Steve Hoernig, traffic operations engineer.

"Everything is installed," he said.

The change coincides with an upgrade due at the Kingshighway and Malone intersection. "At the same time, we began looking at the light at Malone and New Madrid, and had been in contact with the city about them building the new BMU building," said Hoernig.

With the new building and an expected increase in traffic the city had inquired about the possibility of making the light operational again, he recalled. "So, we decided to go ahead and do them both at the same time," said Hoernig.
