JACKSON -- The Sikeston boys track team could not overcome crucial mistakes in two of their top events during the SEMO North Conference track meet on Friday.

Following a disqualification in the 400-meter relay after a lane mixup between the Bulldogs and the Jackson Indians as well as a false start during the 100-meter dash, Sikeston found themselves looking up at both Cape Central and Jackson when it was all said and done.

Sikeston ended up in third place with 73 points. Cape Central took the conference crown with 83 points while Jackson took second with a 76 and Poplar Bluff rounded out the four with a 29.

"Our varsity boys gave 12 points away," Sikeston track coach Terry Flannigan said. "Those 12 points take us from first to third. That's the disappointing part. There was just a couple of mixups out there. It wasn't a bad performance by them by a long shot though.

"They learned some valuable lessons and I think if something like that was to happen again, there won't be that mistake."

Despite the mistakes, Sikeston saw yet another strong day from their jumpers.

Senior Trey Lewis swept all three jump events. In the long jump, Lewis recorded a distance of 23-feet and 1/2 inches. His triple jump went 45-9 while his high jump was 5-10.

Fellow senior Darryl Howard took second in the long jump while Terry Jamison placed third in the triple jump and Kyland Gross added a second place finish in the high jump.

The Bulldogs' Quentin Washington placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.72. Sikeston's other first place finish came in the 4x200-meter relay with a team time of 1:31.03.

"We knew it was going to be tight and it was tight again," said Flannigan about the conference meet. "Our conference is pretty tough and it seems like that's the way it's been the last three years. It was just a mistake here or there."

On the girls said, the Lady Bulldogs nabbed second behind another sweep in the jumping events and a strong showing throughout the remaining events.

Jalen Peet won both the long jump and triple jump with distances of 15-10 1/2 and 33-4 1/2, respectively.

Betsy Borgsmiller won first in the high jump going away. The senior jumped 5-7. The next highest was 4-10.

"Our varsity girls had a really good day," Flannigan said. "I'm proud of our girls. They kept plugging away and I think they're ready to go to districts."

The Sikeston junior varsity boys and girls team finished third and fourth.

The boys placed third as a team with 48 points while the girls ended fourth with 12.

"I thought our junior varsity groups did very well," Flannigan said. "We've had some problems with our girls junior varsity and we didn't have a full team. But, the one's that were there competed hard."

Full results from the meet are as followed.
